Dina Vardal

Retired Police Officer, Substitute Teacher

Dina Vardal is a retired law enforcement officer, military veteran, and proud mother. She grew up in a home influenced by Greek and Italian traditions in Joliet, Illinois. Her career in public service spans over twenty years, during which she worked as a SWAT officer, firearms instructor, and helicopter mechanic with the National Guard. After retiring from both the police department and military service, she continued to contribute to her community as a substitute teacher and active volunteer. She enjoys traveling, especially to Greece, cooking traditional meals, and caring for her garden.

She was born and raised in Joliet by immigrant parents from different parts of Europe. Her father came from a Greek island, and her mother was from Italy. They settled in Joliet, where her family ran a restaurant for several years. Her mother managed the restaurant, which became a gathering place for the local community. Her father later established an engineering business with his brother that remains family-owned and operated today.

At seventeen, Dina joined the Army National Guard and began college education soon after. She earned an associate degree focused on law enforcement from Joliet Junior College. She then transferred to Western Illinois University, graduating with a major in Law Enforcement Administration and a minor in Accounting. During her college years, she held leadership roles and graduated with honors. Later, while balancing work and family life, she earned a master’s degree in Organizational Development.

Her law enforcement career included several roles across multiple cities. She became a certified SWAT officer and was a firearms instructor, teaching standard and concealed carry courses. She also trained new officers, preparing them for the job's demands. Alongside her police work, she served for 22 years in the Army National Guard as a helicopter mechanic. She worked on several helicopter models and held leadership positions as crew chief and physical fitness coordinator. Her military service included tours in Panama and Germany, which broadened her cultural understanding and helped her build lasting friendships.

After retiring, she became a substitute teacher for elementary and middle school students. Outside work, she enjoys traveling, gardening, and cooking, maintaining strong ties to her heritage. She also played tennis in college, which helped her stay active.

Dina has always valued giving back. She has volunteered with Meals on Wheels, local food banks, animal shelters, and her church. In 2022, she married at her church in Joliet. Above all, she treasures being a mother to her daughter, who brings joy and meaning to her life. Dina Vardal lives by values of kindness, service, and family.
